CASTING NOTICE: BABY SHARK — SUMMER-FALL 2025 (PAID) 

SEEKING ADULT ACTORS TO PERFORM IN PLAYS FOR FAMILIES AND TOURING PRODUCTION

Help set the stage for all children to imagine and learn through play as an actor in the upcoming theatre season at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine (CMTM)!

ABOUT THE POSITION 

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine is seeking adult actors for acting opportunities for the summer and fall portion of the 2025-2026 theatre season: BABY SHARK by Ernie Nolan.

Actors report directly to the Theatre Production Manager.


Auditions will be accepted via virtual submission through April 23, 2025. Actors must submit an Audition Form, and a member of the theatre team will provide the submission prompt.
 

SCHEDULE

  • Rehearsals begin: May 13, 2025
    Note: Rehearsals are scheduled for weekday daytimes

  • Performances onsite at CMTM: June 27 - August 15, 2025

    • 6/27 - 7/6 Wednesdays through Sunday mornings

    • 7/9 - 8/15 Wednesday through Friday mornings

  • Tentative onsite production calendar

  • Note that this production will run in rep with NAKED MOLE RAT GETS DRESSED: THE ROCK EXPERIENCE through the summer.

  • Note: This play intends to tour to Maine Schools and Community Centers in fall 2025 (Oct-Dec)

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

  • Felix La Mer: an underwater explorer. Actor playing Felix La Mer must be comfortable with improvisation with audience.

  • Fifi La Mer: an underwater explorer. Actor playing Fifi La Mer must be comfortable with improvisation with audience.

  • Puppeteer: responsible for operating several puppets of varying size throughout the show. Puppeteer must be comfortable with improvisation with the audience.

  • Understudy: comfortable learning all three tracks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF WORKPLACE / ROLE

  • High-energy performances 

  • It is expected that lines, songs, and choreography will be memorized

  • Choreography may include kneeling, squatting, jumping, and reaching. Blocking may include sitting, standing, walking, kneeling, and running.

  • There is dark blue light backstage and bright lights onstage. 

  • Noise level varies between loud and quiet.

  • Actors may be asked to assist with scene changes as needed.

  • Puppeteer will need to lift and support puppets throughout performances.

  • On tour, actors will be asked to lift up to 30 lbs and team lift up to 50 lbs to load and unload the truck.

COMPENSATION 

Actors are paid for rehearsal and performance time. This is a part-time temporary position—$ 18.23/hour. Actors earn PTO in accordance with Maine’s Earned Paid Leave law (1 hour for every 40 hours worked).

Touring actors are reimbursed for mileage and meals when applicable. Occasional overnight accommodation will be provided when applicable.

Actors work closely with the director, castmates, and the theatre team. Actors report directly to the Theatre Production Manager.

Actors report directly to the Theater Production Manager.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

  • Actor A: Wilbur J. Mole Rat, Jr. - Wilbur is the dreamer, always looking at the clouds when everyone else has tunnel vision. Sees the best (dressed) in everyone. Vocal range top: A4 - bottom: A2

  • Actor B: Grande Mole Rat and H&M Singer - Grande is the popular kid and, consequently, the one with the most to lose. Any shift in the culture could threaten Grande's social dominance. Vocal range top: E5 - bottom: A3

  • Actor C: Venti Mole Rat and H&M Singer - Venti is the enforcer. The colony is a tricky place to understand, and now that Venti does, the mole rat is scared of having to re-discover a new place in it. 

    • Vocal range top: E4 - bottom: E2

  • Actor D: Tall Mole Rat and H&M Singer - Tall is a rule-follower with a heart of gold. Cannot reconcile the non-naked rules with her conscience and naked decency. 

    • Vocal range top: B5 - bottom: B3

  • Actor E: Grand-Pah Mole Rat, Stark Naked, Naked Mole Rat 4, H&M Singer, and Announcer

    • Grand-Pah is the moral authority, who is less interested in pomp than in figuring out how to solve problems. Intimidating in the abstract, dyspeptic, and really old in reality. 

    • Stark Naked is one of the panicked spreaders of information and misinformation. They represent the mood of the larger tunnel culture. 

    • Vocal range top: G4 - bottom: E3

  • Actor F: Weather Mole, Naked Mole Rat 5, H&M Singer, Potential Customer, and Secret Service

    • Weather Mole is one of the panicked spreaders of information and misinformation. They represent the mood of the larger tunnel culture.

    • Secret Service Mole is dead serious, who quickly and magically transforms into a Hendrix/Joplin rocker, then back to dead serious. 

    • Vocal range top: G5 - bottom: A#3

Understudies: The theatre team intends to cast two understudies, who will be responsible for learning three tracks each.

Actors

  • CMTM hires actors for 3-4 Theatre for Young Audiences productions per year. These are generally small-cast productions with adult actors performing for an audience of children and their families. These plays also tour to schools and community centers throughout the state. TYA actors at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine are temporary employees with hourly pay. Actors will rehearse approximately 8 hours a week for 4 weeks, with performances on-site for 4-8 weeks. Weekend availability for performances is required. Experience performing for children and families is preferred. 

  • CMTM produces 2-3 intergenerational shows per year, with a cast of kid and adult actors working together. No performance experience is required to audition. 

  • CMTM occasionally seeks volunteer adult actors to participate in workshops and readings of new plays.

Designers

The Museum & Theatre is always looking for Scenic, Light, Sound, Costume, Projection, and Puppet designers. This is a temporary contracted design opportunity with an allowance for materials and a stipend. Designers will be expected to attend production meetings and be on site for load-in, tech rehearsals, and strikes. 


Directors

CMTM occasionally hires directors for TYA or intergenerational shows. This is a temporary directing opportunity, paid hourly. Directors are responsible for coordinating the rehearsal schedule with the Theatre Company Coordinator, attending production meetings, all rehearsals, and strike. Directors are responsible for the vision of the production and bringing a play to life. Directors advise on pre and post show activities that extend the vision of the play.

Playwrights

CMTM accepts work from literary agents or with a recommendation from an artistic director, literary manager, or dramaturg affiliated with a children’s theatre. At this time, the Children’s Museum & Theatre does not accept unsolicited manuscripts. However, if you have a one-page synopsis you’d like us to consider, you are welcome to send it to theatre@kitetails.org

Theatre Educators

CMTM hires experienced theatre educators to teach our Creative Drama Troupes, Theatre Ensemble Squad, and theatre summer camps.  This is a contracted position paid hourly on a per-semester schedule. Interested candidates should have 2 years of experience teaching theatre and share a process-based philosophy.


Theatre Tech Assistants

CMTM hires theatre assistants to run crew for productions, support technical elements of productions, and other duties identified by supervisors. Must be available to work on weekends.


Theatre Front of House Assistants

CMTM hires theatre assistants to support the front-of-house operations like ushering and taking tickets and other duties identified by supervisors. Must be available to work on weekends.

Volunteer positions

CMTM is constantly looking for volunteers to support the many aspects of the organization. In Maddy’s Theatre, volunteers assist in classes, usher productions, sew costumes, and paint sets. Find out more about how to volunteer for the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine.
