MakerSpace is a workshop for open-ended creation.
This space is designed for Makers!
Become a Maker as you draw, make a sculpture, or engineer something new. Upon entering MakerSpace, you are invited to explore the bins and tables for materials and art supplies. You may find soft textiles, bendy wire, and a large variety of reusable & sustainable objects that promote curiosity & play.
Our workbenches feature rotating projects designed for imaginative problem-solving for all ages. These include popular cardboard challenges, specialized takeovers, and recurring opportunities to learn how to use wood and hand tools with a MakerSpace staff member. Tools may include screwdrivers, drills, hammers, and sometimes even saws!
Free choice materials are available during every Makerspace session.
Grown-up supervision is required in MakerSpace. Interested in learning even more about tools and working with wood? Please visit our Afterschool Experiences page.

Art Inspired by Ashley: Make a Puppet
All visitors also have the option of using MakerSpace materials to make a puppet in the style of artist Ashley Bryan who is famed for creating found object puppets from beach finds. Ashley Bryan is a multi-talented artist, author of the book Beautiful Blackbird, and the featured artist in the “Ashley Bryan’s Beautiful Blackbird Exhibit” adjacent to MakerSpace.
A puppet is anything that you animate and bring to life. Visitors are encouraged to explore materials to find a body, eyes, tails, feet, wings, and other parts to create a character. As you shape the character, you shape your puppet and its story. What life will you create and celebrate!? After you have created your puppet, take it with you to the stage in the Story Kiosk just around the corner.
The “Art Inspired by Ashley: Make a Puppet” activity was designed in partnership with Indigo Arts Alliance.
