THEATRE MUSIC DIRECTORS (TEMPORARY)

Seeking Theatre Choreographers for the 2025-2026 Season in CMTM’s Maddy’s Theatre

POSITION PURPOSE

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine (CMTM) is seeking experienced music directors to music direct upcoming plays in our Children’s Theatre Season. The music director works closely with the directing team, actors, designers, and the Theatre Team. Experience music directing theatre for children and families is preferred. This is a temporary paid position.

The music director reports directly to the Theatre Production Manager. 

POSITION SUMMARY 

  • Work closely with the production director to establish a clear musical vision of the show

  • Work closely with the production director to integrate musical rehearsals into the schedule

  • WOrk closely with Theatre Production Manager on additional music rehearsal needs as necessary

  • Work with the actors to teach music and develop musical performance skills

  • Lead and train actors in vocal warmups to begin rehearsals and performances

  • Attend weekly production meetings as needed

POSITION REQUIREMENTS 

  • Musical Directing experience

  • Energized by CMTM’s mission and values (listed below)

  • Experience working in professional and/or community theatre settings

  • Dedication to creating theatre for family audiences

  • Excellent organizational and classroom management skills

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Experience working with young actors ages 10-17 is preferred for intergenerational productions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF WORKPLACE / ROLE

  • Able to teach music either through recorded tracks or by playing piano

  • Comfort attending virtual meetings and in-person rehearsals

  • Rehearsal rooms can range from noisy to subdued volumes, depending on the cast size and type of show

  • Well-lit, LED fluorescent work lights during the rehearsal period. Dark house and stage lights during tech week

SCHEDULE

Temporary per diem position

Rehearsals are typically on weekdays from 6-8:30 pm or 6-9 pm, depending on the 

availability of the cast and CMTM space availability. Rehearsal schedules span approximately 6 weeks, with one-month performance schedules. Production meetings happen weekly, depending on the availability of the production team. Tech rehearsals run until 10 pm at night the week before a show opens.

This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position. Approximately 15 hours a week in person, M-Th. 

CMTM’s Maddy’s Theatre season runs from June 2025 - May 2026, with five professional productions throughout the season. The season includes two productions during the summer (June/July and August), two during the winter (Dec and Jan/Feb) , and closing in spring (April).

COMPENSATION

$18.23 / hour. Music Directors are paid for time in rehearsal and production meetings.

Earned Paid Leave (EPL): 1 hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked. 

EPL accumulated but not used is paid to the employee at the end of the temporary employment.

CMTM has a system of pay that offers a base rate based on position. This system is designed for equity and as such we do not have the ability to negotiate the compensation listed above.
