Maddy’s Theatre Presents “The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus”

Housing the nation’s oldest, continuously operating children’s theatre in the nation, Maddy’s Theatre opens The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus on September 17th as the third production in its inaugural summer season at its new state-of-the-art facility at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine. This tour-de-force of imagination, storytelling and magic is ideal for children six to twelve years old and their families. Through storytelling and found object puppetry, this play explores the relationship between wild animals and the humans that encroach their lands. How can we share the planet? How can we take on the mission to save the world ourselves?

Reba Askari, Theatre Artistic Director at the Museum & Theatre said, “In the context of climate change, the message of this play is key right now. This play is the voice of all of the creatures whose habitats we impact. By featuring a young protagonist who talks about what children can do to share the planet, this play inspires action. So many people struggle with feelings of despair about what we have done and how we can fix it. This play is a call to action!”

Directed by Tess Van Horn, The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus stars Savannah Irish, a Maine native who holds a BA in Theatre with a minor in music from The University of Southern Maine. In 2018, she held a year long internship with the Walt Disney World CompanyⓇ as an Entertainment Costumer. When not on stage, she serves as Visitor Engagement Associate at the Museum & Theatre.

Produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company INC. of Woodstock, IL, this family friendly production runs until October 11, 2021. Tickets are $10 per person; Maddy’s Theatre offers special shows for members, as well as pay-what-you-can performances.
