THEATRE PRODUCTION DIRECTOR (TEMPORARY)

Seeking Theatre Directors for the 2025-2026 Season in CMTM’s Maddy’s Theatre

POSITION PURPOSE

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine (CMTM) is seeking experienced theatre directors to direct upcoming plays in our Children’s Theatre Season. The director works closely with the actors, designers, and the Theatre Production team. This is a temporary paid position.

The director reports directly to the Theatre Artistic Director. 

POSITION SUMMARY

  • Work closely with the CMTM Theatre Team on casting the production

  • Communicate vision of the production to design team, providing clear and timely feedback on design elements throughout the process

  • Communicate and guide the vision of the production with actors through rehearsals

  • Attend weekly production meetings with CMTM Production Manager and design team

  • Attend as-needed meetings with the CMTM Theatre Team

  • Work closely with the stage management for clear and efficient communication to both acting team and production team

  • Work with both adult and child actors (based on show) using CMTM’s values and guidelines

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Energized by CMTM’s mission and values (listed below)

  • Experience working in professional and/or community theatre settings

  • Dedication to creating theatre for family audiences

  • Excellent organizational and classroom management skills

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Experience directing theatre for children and family audiences is preferred

  • Experience working with young actors ages 10-17 is preferred for intergenerational productions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF WORKPLACE / ROLE

  • Comfort attending virtual meetings and in-person rehearsals

  • Rehearsal rooms can range from noisy to subdued volumes depending on the cast size and type of show

  • Well-lit, LED fluorescent work lights during the rehearsal period. Dark house and stage lights during tech week

Rehearsals are typically on weekdays from 6-8:30 pm or 6-9 pm depending on the 

availability of the cast and CMTM space availability. Rehearsal schedules span approximately 6 

weeks, with one-month performance schedules. Production meetings happen weekly, 

depending on the availability of the production team.


This is a temporary, part-time, hourly position. Approximately 15 hours a week in person Monday to Thursday. 

CMTM’s Maddy’s Theatre season runs from June to May, with six professional productions throughout the season. The season includes two productions during the summer (running in rep through July and August), two during the winter (Dec and Jan/Feb), and closing spring (April).


COMPENSATION

$18.23 / hour. Directors are paid for all their time worked, including time in rehearsal and production meetings.

Earned Paid Leave (EPL): 1 hour of paid leave for every 40 hours worked. 

EPL accumulated but not used is paid to employee at end of temporary employment.

CMTM has a system of pay that offers a base rate based on position. This system is designed for equity and as such we do not have the ability to negotiate the compensation listed above.
