Celebrity Chefs, Carrot Salsa, and Coconut Curry
The Museum & Theatre of Maine is excited to participate in this year's Recipes for Welcoming event on Monday, September 13th in collaboration with the City of Portland's Office of Economic Opportunity, Wayside Food Programs, The Empanada Club, and Yardie Ting. Community members are invited to participate in Welcoming Week: There are meal kits available for pick up, recipes to download, and live cooking show to stream! At meal kit pick up there will be Portland chefs, food samples, music, and a collaborative art creation! If you just want to the recipes you can download them and cook them at home!
On Monday, September 13th community members are invited to pick up a meal kit with all of the ingredients needed to make both carrot salsa from the Empanada Club and Coconut Curry from Yardie Ting. While picking up the meal kit community members can meet our local celebrity chefs. Adrian Espinoza will be offering an empanada sample with his carrot salsa, and Shanna Kay Wright will be offering a sample of her Coconut Curry. To register for a meal kit, visit www.portlandofopportunity.com/recipes-for-welcoming
Meal kits and information about the cultural recipes will be distributed through Wayside's existing food systems. Once you have registered for a meal kit you can pick it up at Wayside (135 Walton St. Portland) on September 13th any time between 2 and 6 pm.
The Museum & Theatre will be at meal kit pick up at Wayside to create a collaborative map of the City of Portland. Artists of all ages can stop by to add their favorite Portland location. Children and families are invited to add places and locations to the map that are important to them. Add your home, your school, or a place you've played this summer! Feel free to stop by and enjoy the fun, even if you are not picking up a meal kit. And the event continues at home from your kitchen! On September 15th and September 16th, tune in for a live cooking show on Facebook Live (PortlandOEO) or on Channel 5 to get the most out of your recipes.
Recipes for Welcoming is the cornerstone event of City of Portland's Annual Welcoming Week, an event that honors all that immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers bring to the community. The event resonates with the Museum & Theatre's goals of belonging and welcome-ability and we are honored to support our long-term partner, the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), in this work. The Museum & Theatre and OEO have partnered for several years and the Office of Economic Opportunity has been especially supportive of the Museum & Theatre's effort to create classes for ESOL families with free childcare. We are so happy to expand our partnership to include this community-based foodways event!
