Backstage Crew members (ages 11-15) are an integral part of the Maddy’s Theatre team, helping to prep the stage before the audience arrives and making behind-the-scenes magic during the performance. There are three steps to becoming a crew member in Maddy’s Theatre:
Attend a crew workshop to learn the different backstage roles in a show: running the light and sound board, using the projector and microphones, and setting up the stage before a performance.
Shadow another youth crew member during a weekend of performances to experience working on a real live show. Learn about the performance schedule and what happens before and after a show.
Once you’re comfortable shadowing, crew members can sign up to work backstage on mainstage productions!
In Maddy’s Theatre at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine, we strive to create an inclusive and welcoming environment where young actors feel safe to explore their truest selves. Youth Theatre Ensembles at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine place process and participation over product, ensuring a collaborative and distinct model of synergy and teamwork to create a play.
The young crew member who will thrive in our ensemble program enjoys the creative process, values teamwork, and has a sincere interest in the performing arts. In our experience, children who have not voiced an independent desire to participate in a production do not get as much out of it. If your child has an interest in performing in a more professional setting, consider auditioning for an intergenerational production.
