Every spring in the land we now call Maine, hundreds of thousands of amphibians awaken to leave their underground homes in the pouring rain to make the journey to vernal pools, known as Big Night. Salamanders and frogs can travel up to half a mile, crossing roads to begin the next phase of amphibious life cycles.
Join us as we celebrate the upcoming spring Big Night with special programming focused on the life cycle of frogs, the importance of vernal pools, and interactive learning. Each day highlights a variety of educational, hands-on activities in addition to exploring the exhibits. All programs are included with admission. Meet a Frog requires registration. 9:45 am - 10:15 am - Home for a Salamander
The snow has melted, and the rain is coming; it’s time to make a home for a salamander! Use your imagination and science to design a home for a pretend salamander. Throughout this activity, we will be learning how real salamanders and many other creatures survive in the special habitat of vernal pools. Included with Admission.
11:00 am - 11:30 am - Pop-Up Play - It’s a BIG Night!
It’s a big night for our spotted salamander friend in the theatre. Imagine and create the sound of spring waking up, meet a spotted salamander puppet, and find out how to be a salamander ambassador. Included with Admission.
11:30 am - 12 pm - Citizen Science: Big Night!

Join us to read a story of a family who helps amphibians on Big Night and make a poster featuring your favorite amphibian. Included with Admission.
2:00 pm - 2:30 pm - Pop-Up Play - It’s a BIG Night!
It’s a big night for our spotted salamander friend in the theatre. Imagine and create the sound of spring waking up, meet a spotted salamander puppet, and find out how to be a salamander ambassador. Included with Admission.
2:30 pm - 3:00 pm - Meet a Frog with the Center for Wildlife
Join The Center for Wildlife to meet a live frog. Make observations and explore the adaptations of a live frog. Registration is required to ensure the safety of the ambassador animal.
