CMTM is proud to partner with Mayo Street Arts on the biennial city-wide international festival of puppetry, Puppets in Portland (PiP). CMTM will host four performances of Bois by Montreal-based Puzzle Théâtre.
Puzzle Théâtre's Bois
Puzzle Théâtre’s Bois beckons audience members into a world that invites them to think and wonder. A green leaf that grows on a dead branch, pieces of wood that come together to form strange creatures, some hostile, some comical… Bois evokes a curious world that surprises, amazes, and inspires. Founded in 1996 in Bulgaria and established in Montreal since 2004, Puzzle Théâtre’s unique style combines various types of traditional and contemporary performance: dramatic theater, object theater, and puppetry. The company distinguishes itself with a colored amalgam of styles and the great diversity of means of expression that it proposes. Puzzle Théâtre’s wordless performance leaves the audience the freedom to interpret the unmentioned, to freely associate ideas and allow it to feel what is not explicitly told. This has become a key artistic characteristic of the company. In keeping with this artistic approach, Bois draws inspiration from a whole new medium to create an atypical, colorful puppet show full of humor and unexpected situations.
Puppets in Portland
Puppets in Portland (PiP) is a biennial, city-wide international festival of puppetry arts produced by Mayo Street Arts in Portland, Maine. Puppetry is a cultural universal, found in every single country around the world. Since the dawn of time, humans have imbued objects with life to tell stories, perform rituals, and evoke powers larger than ourselves. From September 13-22, PiP's puppeteers will blanket Portland for 10 days, collaborating with community partners across the city to present world-class performances, hands-on workshops, and free public events including a parade through Portland's Kennedy Park neighborhood.
