CMTM celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with Arts and Storytime Programming
May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! This month, and any month this year, one can visit the exhibit called Meet Our Neighbors: The Korean Language School. This exhibit highlights just one of the many diverse countries and cultures in Asia and the Pacific Islands. Additionally, this exhibit invites us to explore the Korean-American culture that is an important part of our local community. When creating the exhibit, the co-curators from the Korean Language School worked to honor both historical traditions and celebrate modern life. From marveling at the centuries-old Korean language to diving into tales of Chinese immigrants, our programs use stories and art to celebrate the unique and wonderful voices and contributions of AAPI individuals that are an important part of our community, past and present.
Arts and Storytime Programming for Asian American and Pacific Island Heritage Month:
In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Museum & Theatre is excited to launch a special Storytime and Makerspace Series. Join us during the month of May for an interactive storytime of Eyes that Kiss in the Corners and Watercress. Eyes that Kiss in the Corners is a dazzling, lyrical ode to loving oneself. Joanna Ho’s tender yet powerful words and Dung Ho’s vibrant illustrations inspire readers to recognize their own beauty and strength, igniting a revolution of self-discovery and confidence. Andrea Wang and Jason Chin’s Watercress is the thought-provoking, gorgeously illustrated story of a first-generation girl coming to terms with, and ultimately celebrating, her Chinese heritage.
Celebrate You: Self-Portrait Art Time
Join us in the Makerspace to create our own self-portraits and portraits of people we love. Who in your life makes you feel special, and how can we celebrate them through art? From the poetry of Eyes that Kiss in the Corners to self-portrait exploration, we use the tools that we have to celebrate ourselves, each other, and what it means to be home.
Exploring Memory Through Watercolor Painting
What does home mean to you? Inspired by Jason Chin's illustrations merging Eastern and Western style in Watercress, come to the Makerspace to explore how we paint our own memories, remembering our own family histories while painting a new path forward.
Make a Korean Language Book Mark
Try your hand at writing in Hangeul, the Korean alphabet. Make a bookmark with your name, a message of peace, or another word in Korean. This program is led by Korean Langage School teachers, both past and present. To learn more about the school and to celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May and all year, check out our Meet Our Neighbors: The Korean Language School exhibit!
