Exhibit Feature Friday: Outdoor Adventure
Exhibit Feature Friday
At the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine (CMTM), we use the word exhibit to describe the interactive experiences, spaces and displays spread across three floors and immediately outside the facility at 250 Thompson’s Point Road. CMTM is home to over 15 exhibits, each designed to encourage experiential learning through open-ended play.
Our team at CMTM decided to give each exhibit the spotlight it deserves and is dedicating Fridays to highlighting a new exhibit, diving a little deeper into the WHY and HOW behind each playful space and experience.
EXHIBIT: Outdoor Adventure
LOCATION: Outside
In the Outdoor Adventure exhibit, visitors can climb, slide, observe, and imagine their way through multiple activity zones. Each Outdoor Adventure component was designed to encourage discovery and exploration of the natural world.
Journey - Play Structure
The main feature of the Outdoor Adventure exhibit is a multi-tiered playground! This structure by CedarWorks is custom designed and constructed primarily from Northern White cedar. The giant outdoor play set includes three slides, a climbing wall, an observation tower, and a tunnel.
Dig - Sandbox
In the Dig sandbox, visitors can construct, create, and demolish to their heart's content! Guests can play with sand toys and construction vehicles or engage in sensory explorations in this classic sandbox. Surrounded by a circular bench of Maine granite, it’s large enough for children and their caregivers to play inside together!
Grow - Teaching Garden
The Outdoor Adventure exhibit includes a teaching garden! Intended to connect children with the earth, this garden space teaches about botany and food systems through hands-on exploration.
Garden beds are planted in late spring and maintained throughout the summer and fall. Visitors will find a variety of plants, fruits, herbs, and vegetables throughout the raised beds. Observe them growing and changing throughout the different seasons!
Gather Lawn
Looking for more outdoor fun? Spend some time on the Gather Lawn! This community gathering area is located in front of the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine. It includes picnic tables, an open expanse of grass, and a stone labyrinth for reflection, leisure, and play.
