When Visitor Engagement Associate Savannah Irish talks about her childhood plans to work in theatre, she says, “It was 100%. No doubt." Although Savannah’s journey has taken her from Maine to Florida and back, her path to starring in The Girl Who Swallowed a Cactus in Maddy’s Theatre was a fairly direct one. She finds herself portraying a rowdy, young girl who wants to protect the planet.

Homemade Whipped Cream, Free Ice Cream, and Combating Hunger

Nearly one in four children in Maine experience food insecurity, the highest rate across all six New England states. Children of color and children living in rural counties are disproportionately impacted by food insecurity. That is why from 9 am to 4 pm on October 2nd, 2021, Hood will sponsor a Feeding Maine Families Day event at the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine’s Gather Lawn. Feeding Maine Families Day will raise awareness about families and children experiencing hunger, highlight initiatives in Maine to combat childhood hunger and promote food equity, and encourage food science education in a playful way.

Gather ‘Round Concert Series: The Burnurwurbskek Singers

On Saturday, October 9th the Burnurwurbskek Singers will be performing at the Museum & Theatre on the Gather Lawn. This musical performance is the first performance of our Gather ‘Round Concert series, highlighting diverse musicians from Maine. The general public is encouraged to come enjoy the music, free of charge. Comprised of men representing many of Maine’s Wabanaki people, the Burnurwurbskek Singers perform traditional northeast woodland songs as well as more contemporary, intertribal songs, passed down in their rich oral tradition from generation to generation.

Maine Arts Commission Arts Learning Grant Helps Fund Museum & Theatre and Boys and Girls Club Partnership

The Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine is excited to announce that we have been awarded a $5,000 Arts Learning Grant to help support Maddy’s Theatre Youth Theatre Ensemble program in partnership with the Boy & Girls Club of Southern Maine (BGCSM). Maddy’s Theatre will offer two ensemble theatre programs at the Riverton Clubhouse of the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine. Each session of the program will be approximately 15 weeks long, beginning with a period of improvisation and ending with a performance in Maddy’s Theatre at Thompson’s Point.

Celebrity Chefs, Carrot Salsa, and Coconut Curry

The Museum & Theatre of Maine is excited to participate in this year's Recipes for Welcoming event on Monday, September 13th in collaboration with the City of Portland's Office of Economic Opportunity, Wayside Food Programs, The Empanada Club, and Yardie Ting. Community members are invited to sign up for a meal kit and pick it up on September 13th. At pick up there will be Portland chefs, food samples, music, and a collaborative art creation! If you don’t want the full meal kit you can also download the recipes and cook them at home!
