Marketing & Communications Internship

POSITION PURPOSE

The Marketing & Communications Intern supports the department’s efforts to promote the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine’s mission: to set the stage for every child to imagine and learn through play. This role provides hands-on experience in nonprofit marketing and communications while helping to increase awareness, drive visitation, and deepen community engagement.

Working under the guidance of the Director of Marketing & Communications—and in collaboration with the Marketing & Communications Coordinator and Assistant—the intern will help implement and evaluate multimedia strategies that support admissions, fundraising, and brand storytelling. The position is ideal for a creative, curious, and motivated individual who is excited to explore the intersection of marketing, education, and community impact.

INTERNSHIP SUMMARY & LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

Influencer Campaign – Play in Maine

Support the development of a refreshed influencer outreach program to elevate CMTM’s digital presence:

  • Conduct an audit of local and regional influencers aligned with CMTM’s values and audience

  • Build an influencer contact database

  • Review, refine, and brand existing influencer guidelines

  • Assist in outreach and scheduling for influencer visits

  • Help coordinate content collaboration in support of the Play in Maine campaign

Visitor Engagement – “How You Play” Survey

Help capture visitor stories and strengthen community connection through a lobby-based storytelling initiative:

  • Research survey platforms and kiosk tools best suited for in-museum engagement

  • Assist in designing a simple, interactive survey that invites visitors to share how they play at CMTM

  • Design and launch kiosk 

  • Collect and organize responses to highlight impact quotes and stories

  • Contribute to storytelling efforts that enhance visibility for Play in Maine

Survey & Analysis

Gain experience with visitor research and data-informed strategy by supporting the team’s ongoing evaluation efforts:

  • Assist in planning and implementing an onsite visitor satisfaction survey

  • Help with data collection, cleaning, and basic analysis

  • Report on findings and recommendations

Additional Projects

The intern may also contribute to other marketing and communications projects as they arise, including social media support, copywriting, content creation, and event promotion.

  • Coursework and/or fieldwork in marketing, communications, public relations, new media, or a related field

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Comfortable working with technology used for digital publishing, such as Squarespace or WordPress

  • Proficiency with Google Suite 

  • Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite

  • Proficiency with cell phone photography and app use

  • Ability to speak Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Acholi, Somali, Lingala, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Tshiluba, Khmer, or Vietnamese a plus

REFLECTION, EVALUATION, AND ASSESSMENT 

  • Weekly reflections and check-ins with the MarCom department 

  • The department director and intern mentor will evaluate internship experiences to ensure learning objectives are met

  • Midterm and final evaluation meetings will ensure interns receive critical feedback and have the opportunity to suggest improvements to their internship experiences 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF WORKPLACE / ROLE

  • The position requires a combination of computer work ad in person meetings.

  • Workspace is located within a clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated facility. 

  • While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to see, talk or hear. 

  • The employee frequently is required to use hands or fingers, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. 

  • The noise level of the work environment is typically low to moderate.

SCHEDULE 

Temporary positions: June to August 2025. Generally, Monday through Friday. Position hours and schedule are to be mutually determined. The internship requires a minimum of 100 hours.

COMPENSATION

Interns may earn school credit per college or university approval. CMTM's hourly wage for internships is $16/hour.

CMTM has an equitable system of pay that offers a base rate based on position, and as such, we do not have the ability to negotiate the compensation listed above.
